Cnidarians have two basic body forms: free-swimming medusae and sessile polyps, both radially symmetrical with a single orifice used for digestion and respiration. Many species alternate between asexual polyp stages and sexual medusae stages, though some omit one form entirely. Their bodies consist of mesoglea, a non-living jelly-like substance, sandwiched between two layers of epithelium. Cnidocytes, or cnidoblasts, are specialized cells that fire harpoon-like structures for envenomation and prey capture.
